Citizens of a Higher Kingdom

Aug 23, 2025

Theme Scripture: Ephesians 2:19 – “Now, therefore, you are no longer strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God.”

You Carry a Heavenly Passport

Imagine arriving in a new country. As soon as your passport is stamped, your old country’s rules no longer apply—you’re now subject to the laws of your new nation.

That’s exactly what happens when we come into God’s Kingdom. Salvation isn’t just forgiveness of sins—it’s a transfer of citizenship. Through Jesus Christ, you’ve been issued a heavenly passport.

Who You Really Are in Christ

The Apostle John reminds us:

📖 “Beloved, now we are children of God; and it has not yet been revealed what we shall be, but we know that when He is revealed, we shall be like Him…” (1 John 3:2)

Right now, you are a child of God. That’s your present identity. But your future is even greater—you will one day be fully transformed to reflect Christ in His glory.

Paul adds in Ephesians 3:14–15 that God’s family isn’t just here on earth, but also in heaven: “from whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named.” That means you belong to something much larger than you can see.

The Law of the Kingdom: Love

In every nation there are laws, but in God’s Kingdom the law is love.

📖 “Love does no harm to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfillment of the law.” (Romans 13:10)

Paul breaks it down further in 1 Corinthians 13:4–8—love is patient, kind, humble, enduring, truthful, forgiving, and unfailing.

Living by this law ensures you are never out of alignment with either heaven’s standards or earth’s best laws.

Why Understanding Matters

Jesus said, “You shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free” (John 8:32).

It’s not just knowing that sets you free—it’s understanding. Like a child who doesn’t realize that a hot stove will burn until they experience it, many Christians live without fully grasping their new identity. Once you understand who you are in Christ, you begin to live free from fear, bondage, and confusion.

Citizenship Comes with Authority

The Bible also reminds us that not every spiritual being is on God’s side.

📖 “They sacrificed to demons, not to God, to gods they did not know…” (Deuteronomy 32:17)

As citizens of heaven, we are not powerless against these forces. Our allegiance to Christ gives us authority over them. Philippians 3:20 says, “Our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ.”
